Crayford’s Waterside Gardens provide a landmark community park overlooking the River Cray. With funding from the Homes & Communities Agency, the park was landscaped and modernised in 2009, rejuvenating a previously underused space. Mike and Trish Hawes, of MeiLoci, working with the late landscape Architect and artist David Buurma, designed the park to celebrate Crayford’s history with striking modern forms. The footbridge and liberty entrance now lead passers-by towards a sculptural pavilion, an interactive water feature, a coffee shop with sun terrace and a performance space with amphitheatre seating. The park is now an important and inspirational space for everyone to enjoy and gives the town centre a perfect focal point. The project has also inspired complementary works at Tannery Gardens and Shenstone Park, which have helped illustrate Crayford’s industrial history in vivid detail.
